I have been servicing my old Ham Radio gear and found I really needed a Frequency Counter to help me sort out drift problems with the VFOs. Anybody who reads the RSGB publication Radcom, will know EI9GQ's articles Homebrew. One of these was a frequency counter based on a pretty simple PIC circuit - so I decided to give it a go.

The hardest part in the end was getting the PIC programming software (pikdev.free.fr) running on my Ubuntu PC and talking correctly to the serial interface for the programmer. But after some great help from a kind Frenchman, I did get that part working - all a bit strange to start with as I haven't worked with a PIC before.

The picture below shows the completed counter circuit connected in this case to a test crystal oscillator. (So thanks also to EI9GQ for those great articles.)

The next problem was getting the counter calibrated. Following EI9GQ's suggestion, my aim was to use the Russian frequency standard transmissions on 9.996MHz as my reference, and then sync the test oscillator to that. With no general coverage receiver to hand, I used a combination of WEBSDR and a simple computer spectrum analyser to identify the Russian transmission and sync up the test oscillator. I think I managed to get it to with about 20Hz or so, which is not a bad start.

Just need to get it boxed now....

Maybe it will be useful to others, who knows.

Step 1.
Ignore everything on the jmri.org website.

Step 2.
Install the latest Java relaese by following the steps on this website.

Step 3.
Download the newest release of JMRI from here
Unzip it to somewhere you'll remember.

Step 4.
Add yourself to the 'Dialout' user group:
sudo useradd ralph dialout

Step 5.
Make sure you have the correct permissions to access the serial ports:
sudo gpasswd -a ${USER} dialout

That should do it!

For one step better refined, create a desktop icon that will launch the JMRI app you want - DecoderPro3 in my case (thanks to Dave from Australia on the JMRI Users Group):
The above works for JMRI located in a JMRI folder in /opt (and you'll need root permissions to do that). Save this text as a file in /usr/share/applications. You should then be able to drag it to the Unity launcher and off you go.

After a couple of winters with lots of sunshine and not so much snow, it is nice to have such a long spell of proper winter weather - and Rory the Golden Retriever thinks it's the best time of year.
Forecast is for another dump Mon/Tues, so looking forward to some more good skiing later in the week.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-69430609368370962572013-02-06T17:12:00.003+00:002013-02-06T17:12:59.960+00:00Wow - finally made it back in. So, time now to start resurrecting this blog I think.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-60550414422560587262010-08-24T13:37:00.002+00:002010-08-24T13:42:50.704+00:00Where've you been?Yes, ok, it has been a long time since we made a post. No excuse.

We are now in the thick of peak season though, so perhaps it is not hard to understand.

It's been a good summer here - or I should say, it is a good summer here, as it is by no means over yet. A lot of hot sunny weather in the Slovenian Alps. This year though, we have not had the regular and spectacular thunderstorms of last year, which is a pity. It has also made it much harder to keep the water butts filled up, badly needed for watering all the flower troughs.

On the plus side, all the fruit trees are heavily laden this year, much more so than last. Plumbs anybody? There's going to be a lot of them.

So hopefully won't so long 'till the next one.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-7394165520098024402010-08-24T12:13:00.000+00:002010-08-24T12:14:01.228+00:00Foolow us also on Facebook<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bohinjska-Bela-Slovenia/Visitslovenija/90452341758" target="_TOP" style="font-family: "lucida grande",tahoma,verdana,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-variant: normal; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; color: #3B5998; text-decoration: none;" title="Visitslovenija">Visitslovenija

<a href="http://www.facebook.com/business/dashboard/" target="_TOP" style="font-family: "lucida grande",tahoma,verdana,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-variant: normal; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; color: #3B5998; text-decoration: none;" title="Make your own badge!">Promote your Page tooAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-83795186185698209722010-01-09T15:50:00.003+00:002010-01-09T15:55:19.049+00:00Snow is back in SloveniaHappy New Year! The forests are also starting to change colour. Nice time of year though. I guess the main down side is the pool is now effectively shut for the season - there's not enough sunshine to keep the water warm enough. Ah well......
It is also much quieter here now. Remarkable how suddenly that happens - schools go back and - bam - - everybody's gone. So a nice time to visit Slovenia, no crowds. In fact on a lot of days we have had to cover the solar panels as the pool water temperature was heading beyond 28deg. Think we should really be looking to heat the house hot water too. There is clearly spare capacity in the system at this time of year.
So, yes, it's lovely.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-81356868754903816322009-07-04T13:14:00.001+00:002009-07-04T13:17:25.831+00:00Tah Dah!It's done. Been sooo busy etc etc..

The pool? Well predictably, things are not going to plan. All the infrastructure is in place, the solar heating commissioned and hot sunny days are here. However, I don't yet have the pool liner from our French supplier. About a month late so far.

It has been promised for this week, so fingers crossed.

Once it is here, it should only take a few days to get it installed and the pool filled with water. And with temperatures here in the high 20's I can't wait to jump in!

Here's some pics; the rustic steps up to the pool and the pump house.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-57614556470171851372009-05-19T18:32:00.002+00:002009-05-19T18:41:57.328+00:00Snow to Spring to Summer in SloveniaSeems like it was only yesterday we still had snow. How quickly it moves to spring - everything turns a vivid green - and now it is summer. It is remarkable how the spring flowers can appear so suddenly after months of cold snowy weather and appear they do in profusion.

In fact we have a spring flower festival here in Bled in May. I can see why.

So, yes, it is technically still spring. Yet the max/min temperatures are now 26/19 deg (that's 19deg at night!). So it feels like summer. Also means we have had some terrific thunderstorms - see tonights photo - taken from our balcony - of a classic thunder cloud, probably over Ljubljana, would be my guess.

So nice to see the seasons changing with such great definition. Lovely.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-70425095947025122522009-04-05T16:07:00.002+00:002009-04-05T16:11:48.609+00:00Swimming Pool ProgressGosh - wish this pool was finished already - been up at 20deg today. Lovely!

Most of the hard works is done now. Structure built, pipes in the ground, earth backfilled.
We are now on to fitting out the pump and filter station and to make a start on building up the solar heating panels.

Next big step will be installation of the liner. All built by the Musto team from salvaged timber.

All it needs now is for the vine to grow and give it some green.

After a week of really hot weather, winter returned yesterday. Isn't that great! When you are used to figures in the millions, it seems almost hard to believe. But there you go.

This is our first year living out here full time, so it is fascinating watching the season progress (having arrived in December). The sun is already quite hot, warm enough to sit outside in a t-shirt with a cup of coffee and the spring bulbs are beginning to flower - and yet, we are still able to enjoy great skiing. Nothing remarkable to long time Alpine residents I'm sure, but lots of fun for us newbies!

Couple of photos from this morning:

A farmers shed....

... and enjoying the sunshine at Soriska Planina, one of our local ski centres....

www.slovenia-holidays.com

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-85969106188419646702009-02-28T20:20:00.002+00:002009-02-28T20:32:36.311+00:00Where we are

Lots of people, I know, have problems working out just where the heck Slovenia is.

So here you go:

Bit small maybe, so hope you can read it!

The blue dots show our closest airports served by the low cost boys.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-28833736507650702022009-02-17T16:46:00.005+00:002009-02-17T17:00:48.995+00:00Skiing at KaninHeck, I know; more stuff on skiing in Slovenia. Snow base is at almost 9m. Yes that's NINE meters. Not going to run out soon then?
Only problem is that the top two chairlifts are still buried. They are working on them though, so we hope to see them running soon.

Also, the link to the Italian side has not been made yet - it's the Italians bit actually that hasn't been finished yet. Hope to see that completed for next season.

So there's plenty of snow to play in - even Bovec itself has thick snow everywhere.

Now, the other great thing about skiing in Slovenia is that it is so relaxed. No push and shove, no queuing really and it is safe to leave your kit lying around. Just take a look at this picture. This is peoples backpacks, tidily left hanging in the top station - and they know it will still be there with nothing pinched when they get back for it. Now isn't that nice?

Makes for a great family skiing destination.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080259258747252544noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5684335003054538850.post-62889473811742093112009-02-03T09:34:00.003+00:002009-02-03T09:43:23.229+00:00Snow, snow, snowI guess 30cm of snow is a shock for London and I can understand how it could disrupt things. I do not understand however how the railways and airports can't cope with it.
